First Time Live Far East Tour

Far East Tour

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra players have enjoyed a highly anticipated tour of Asia this summer alongside Principal Conductor Charles Dutoit and soloists Yuja Wang (piano) and Ye-Eun Choi (violin).

The recent tour to the Far East involved performances at a vast array of venues, including Bunkyo Civic Hall in Tokyo, Seoul Arts Centre and Taipei National Concert Hall in Taiwan (pictured above). A highlight of the repertoire has been Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé, which Charles Dutoit and the Orchestra will be performing at the opening concert of the upcoming season at Royal Festival Hall, London.

First Time Live

In March 2013, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra delivered an education project that saw local children choose music for concerts that were performed by the Orchestra at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe.

The event gave young people between the ages of 11 and 16 the experience of working with classical music in a new way, by planning, programming and presenting a concert as part of a series of projects called First Time Live, an innovative new touring programme that aims to bring orchestral music into the lives of young people in some of the hardest-to-reach communities across England. First Time Live - Youth is part of a national tour produced by national music charity Orchestras Live that will take place in ten locations in 2013 and 2014. The workshops and concert in Scunthorpe were led by RPO resound, the longest running orchestral music outreach programme of its kind, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year.

Participants from local schools were selected to take part and worked with the Orchestra over three weekends between January and March, and were mentored in the interim through a secure, online social-learning forum called Makewaves. The project culminated in a seventy-five minute concert performed to over 2,000 local children and included a range of music chosen by the young people involved, such as Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and John Williams' famous Star Wars® theme.
